Tribune Tower, 13th Street, Oakland, c.1925
The ‘Oakland Tribune’ newspaper began publication in 1874, and was bought in 1915 by Joseph Knowland, a former U.S. congressman. He built this 21-storey Tribune Tower in 1923, which became its iconic company headquarters. The Knowland family owned the newspaper for over fifty years, and were also known for their efforts to modernize the Port of Oakland, develop the Bay Bridge, and establish a regional park system for Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Tribune Tower - probably inspired by the the campanile in St. Mark's Square, Venice. Architect - Foulkes - traveled extensively in Spain, England, Germany and Italy, India, China and Japan - returned to SF 1906.
