Eastern Terminus, Clay Street Hill Railroad Co., c
The Clay Street Hill Railroad first operated in 1873 and was the first successful cable-pulled street railway. The inventor of the cable car line was Andrew Smith Hallidie, inspired to reduce the suffering of horses that hauled streetcars up Jackson Street. This line led to the westward expansion of residential areas. revision: 2-2014 sf_kearny_portsmouth_sep_P
