Alice Street, South from 12th St, Oakland, 1873
Formerly known as ‘Encinal’, meaning oak woodland, Oakland once had the largest coastal live oak forest in California. In his 1854 address, the City’s first mayor emphasized that preserving the oaks was paramount and destruction of a single tree a public injury. Therefore, wide streets were frequently developed around the oaks. Oakland Public Library
