Humboldt County, Logging Giant Redwood, c1890
Large scale logging in the coast redwoods began in the 1850’s. Simple tools were used, and oxen, horses and mules dragged fallen trees to sawmills before railroads were established. Finished lumber was shipped by coastal schooners to build San Francisco or loaded onto ocean-going ships for use around the world.
