Grand Central Hotel, 12th & Harrison Streets, Oakl
This lavish hotel was built in 1873 and was destroyed by fire only seven years later. It was developed during a time of rapid growth in Oakland, soon after the city was selected as the western terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad. A notable legal battle occurred in 1874 over the land upon which the Grand Central Hotel stood and the cost of its construction. Dr. Samuel Merritt eventually won the case with a judgement of $70,680.
