Jack London with Charmian Kittredge, c.1915
Famed author Jack London (1876–1916) wrote many classics, including “The Call of the Wild” (Piedmont, 1903). He was a pioneer in commercial magazine fiction, and was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. Born in San Francisco, London spent most of his early life in Oakland, and lived in Piedmont for several years with his first wife and children, before marrying his 'muse', Charmian, in 1904. London was a long-term member of the Bohemian Club. Courtesy of Oakland Public Library History Room updated 11-2013
