This building, designed by Burnham & Root in 1889, was the City’s first steel-frame skyscraper. It housed the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, founded by Michael and Charles de Young in 1865, which was family- owned for 134 years , before its sale to the Hearst Corporation in 2000.
